Getting Started with Night-Time Toilet Training

That time has finally come for your little one to shed their diapers and learn to hold their wee until morning! For most children, this stage starts at around four years old, and training can take anywhere from a few months to a year or more (yep, that long). If you’re a parent facing down changing the bedding every night for this long, this trek can quickly become a daunting prospect.

At Brolly Sheets, we’ve been talking to parents about night-time toilet training ever since we got started making bedwetting sheets. In fact, it was during that exact stage of her children’s development that Diane—our founder—got the bright idea for a Brolly Sheet. Suffice to say, we have quite a lot of experience in this area.

Thanks to that experience, we’ve developed a guide to Getting Started with Night-Time Toilet Training. Full of helpful tips and tricks, suggested products, and more, this guide will help you on the journey to dry sheets and eight hours of sleep.

What You’ll Get from Our Night-Time Toilet Training Guide

We cover a wide variety of topics in our night-time guide, touching on everything from when to start to how to tackle a relapse. Keep in mind that the advice is general, gathered over years from many experienced parents, and only meant to help your child on their toilet training journey. In other words, there’s no one-size fits all solution! You’ll need to tailor your approach according to your child’s development.

Some of the points we cover in the guide include:

  • When to begin. The age your child can begin toilet training can depend on whether their bladder is capable of holding the wee for long enough (as well as other factors like their hormone production and other changes). We discuss how to find the right age, and what to do if it doesn’t seem to be working.
  • Helpful products and techniques. From bedwetting alarms to the famous Brolly Sheet, we recommend some products that will make the nitty-gritty of this process easier for you.
  • Tips from experienced parents. First and foremost, you are not alone. Every parent in history has experienced this period in their child’s life, and you can get through it too! These tips are simply to help you along.
  • Reward charts and certificates. Kids love positive reinforcement, so celebrate their wins with some of our downloadable reward charts and certificates!

Points to Remember While Training

  • The journey may be a winding one. If you experience a big loss, don’t feel disheartened, because everyone goes at their own pace. If you experience a big win, then celebrate! It’s important to recognise the milestones.
  • Every child is unique. Your little one may take longer than your friend’s child, or they may get it in a month! This isn’t something to worry about too much, they will get it.
  • Recognise their efforts. If your child feels loved and held throughout this process, then it’s likely to go a lot smoother! Even if they make a mistake, recognise the effort they’re putting into getting better.

It’s also important to give yourself the resources you need to feel secure. In the journey to a full night’s sleep, things can start to feel frustrating, so having a guide can help keep both you and your little one on track. Give our night-time guide a try today!
